Our Story

A movement created to strengthen the voice and participation of women.

The AMC Women Movement is the women’s wing of the Africa Methodist Council. It was inaugurated in 2022 at the Heads of Conferences Summit held in South Africa, where ten women appointed by their respective Conferences were inducted as an Interim Executive Committee.

At the AMC Conference in Benin in 2023, women gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day. The first AMC Women Movement Conference was subsequently held in Lagos, Nigeria, on 30 May 2024, bringing together women leaders from 14 countries and conferences.

The historic first AMC Women Movement Conference marked a significant milestone in building a unified continental platform for women’s leadership, participation and witness.

Leadership & governance

A structure built for accountability.

The AMC Women Movement is governed through an Executive Committee accountable to the Women’s General Assembly and to the AMC Executive.

  • Chairs meetings and gatherings of the Movement.
  • Represents the Movement at AMC meetings including the Annual Heads of Conferences Summit, Enlarged AMC Executive Meeting and AMC Quadrennial Conference.
  • Provides leadership for the promotion of women’s ministries in Africa.
  • Serves as official spokesperson of the Movement.
  • Chairs the electoral process in the absence of the AMC General Secretary.
  • Assists the President in the performance of duties.
  • Chairs meetings in the absence of the President.
  • Takes minutes and keeps records.
  • Prepares quarterly reports and calendar.
  • Handles correspondence.
  • Prepares meeting agendas in consultation with the President.
  • Disseminates information to members.
  • Publicises Movement activities.
  • Represents the Movement at the AMC Enlarged Executive Meeting and Quadrennial Conference.
  • Manages income and expenditure.
  • Maintains financial records.
  • Prepares financial reports.
  • Supports transparency and accountability.
  • Leads fundraising efforts.

How leadership is elected

General Assembly

The Executive is elected at the AMCWM General Assembly.

Election Process

The AMC General Secretary chairs the election process. In their absence, the President chairs it.

Open Eligibility

All active, full members in good standing, Wesleyan women, are eligible irrespective of race, age, marital status, lay or clergy status.

Nomination & Voting

Nominations are taken from the floor of the General Assembly, voted on and declared.

Induction

The elected committee is inducted by the AMC President or representative.

Four-Year Term

Each Executive member serves four years, non-renewable, subject to the By-Laws governing subsequent service.

Regional leadership

Strengthening leadership closer to communities.

Regional chairpersons/coordinators identify women’s organisations and fellowships in their regions, liaise with presidents/chairpersons, chair regional meetings, ensure leadership continuity, schedule meetings and retreats, report quarterly on regional programs, and support implementation of the Movement’s vision, mission, objectives and decisions.

Each AMC member Conference contributes US$100 annually towards Women Movement work.

Preamble

The AMCWM is a wing of the AMC and operates under the AMC Constitution and decisions.

The Africa Methodist Council (AMC) is a Pan-African Association of Methodist, Wesleyan and related Uniting and United churches, with a vision to be a unifying Wesleyan movement for holistic evangelism and transformation of Africa and humanity.

The Africa Methodist Council Women’s Movement (AMCWM) is a wing of the AMC and these By-Laws shall be subject to the AMC Constitution, decisions and practices.
